We were deeply saddened to learn this month of the passing of Dame Stella Rimington, one of our most distinguished and beloved alumnae, at the age of 90.

A Trailblazing Spirit

Dame Stella—pioneering former Director General of MI5—began her extraordinary journey at Nottingham Girls’ High School, where she studied from 1947 to 1955 under her birth name, Stella Whitehouse, following her family’s wartime relocation to the Midlands. Her time at NGHS laid the foundation for a life defined by excellence, courage, and public service.

Among her fondest school memories were the annual productions, where she delighted in the camaraderie and creativity of the performing arts. As she shared with NGHS students during a 2016 BBC interview which you can watch HERE:

“One of my highlights was appearing in school plays…I was never the lead, but I really enjoyed all the things that go into producing a play, the costumes, props, the excitement, the working together as a team.”

This early love of theatre would later blossom into one of her proudest legacies at NGHS—her instrumental role in the creation and launch of the Squire Performing Arts Centre of which she was a Patron of the Development Fund that was set up to fundraise. From planting a Rowan tree during our 2011 Creative Showcase to attending the symbolic topping out ceremony in 2016, Dame Stella championed the vision with heart and determination.

She joined fellow alumna Dame Rosemary Squire, Head Julie Keller, and other distinguised guests for the grand launch in 2017, where the centre came to life—a vibrant space to inspire creativity and confidence in future generations.

She often spoke of the power of the arts in shaping professional poise:

“It’s very important when you’re at school to learn how to present yourself, how to perform in public… When you get out into the great wide world you’ll find yourself doing that sort of thing all the time.”

A Life of Purpose and Unwavering Legacy

Her academic brilliance at NGHS led to her reading English at Edinburgh University and set the stage for an extraordinary career. From humble beginnings as a clerical assistant to her historic appointment as the first woman—and first publicly named—Director General of MI5, Dame Stella broke barriers and forged paths for others to follow. Many credit her as the inspiration behind Dame Judi Dench’s portrayal of “M” in the James Bond films—a testament to her commanding presence and legacy.

As an acclaimed author of numerous books, including a novel published just this year, Dame Stella remained a powerful voice and role model. Her achievements continue to inspire our students—especially those pursuing ambitions in fields where women have traditionally been underrepresented.

Even in her later years, Dame Stella’s warmth and connection to NGHS endured. She followed school news with interest and delight, and in 2024, she received a hand-written Christmas card from a Year 6 pupil as part of our Junior School Christmas Kindness campaign. Her personal reply was both touching and joyful—a gesture that exemplified the grace with which she engaged the world around her.

We are immensely proud to count Dame Stella Rimington among our alumnae. Her name will forever be woven into the fabric of our school’s story—a beacon of intelligence, integrity, and trailblazing spirit.

Head, Julie Keller, captured it beautifully:

“She was an incredible woman, truly inspirational. She was everything you’d expect from a GDST girl. We’re sending our condolences to all of Dame Stella’s family and friends during this difficult time.”
