Saujanya, one of our Wellbeing Prefects, shares some of her ideas with this blog. A great addition to the #NGHSWellbeing Series, we’re thankful for Saujanya’s ability to adapt to social distancing. We know she had lots of different initiatives planned that she’s quickly adjusted to help keep everyone well with a weekly blog.

  1. Try new things

Trying out new things forces you to step out of your comfort zone and learn new skills. It can help to overcome your limitations such as fears, stress and lack of confidence which will ultimately expand your horizons. It also helps us all to learn more about ourselves. It not only helps grow our arsenal of transferable skills but also boosts our confidence and allows us to be strong, resilient women. These attributes lead to long term happiness.

2. Take risks

In the future, we will face many situations where we will have to take risks. By trying new things early on, it allows us to develop the confidence we need to take these risks, where appropriate, and not be held back by fear of failure.

3. Make brave decisions

Choosing a path that takes you out of your comfort zone is often a tough decision. But it can also be the most rewarding. Getting into the habit of doing this also helps to develop the skills needed to become a leader and to not be daunted by difficult situations and choices. Fearlessness leads to a true love of life!

4. Stay motivated

It is especially difficult to stay motivated and productive during this period of lockdown where we are isolated at home. However, staying motivated by doing things that stretch you, is key. Being at home doesn’t mean those opportunities aren’t still out there.

Examples of new things you can do include:

  • Try learning a new instrument with online programmes
  • Play board games with family to have fun and keep your brain working
  • Yoga – for both relaxation and physical fitness
  • Home exercise programmes – there are lots to chose from on YouTube
  • Learn a new language or practice one you’re already learning
  • Write a bucket list or a list of goals for your future. This is an exciting and energising activity!
  • Try baking or cooking things you have never cooked before
  • Get creative – painting, drawing, crafting. These are satisfying ways to pass the time and to build your confidence by creating something yourself. They can often have the benefits of mindfulness too.

5. Practice gratitude

Keeping a reflection or “gratitude diary”, where you are able to reflect and focus on the positive aspects of your day, keeps you feeling optimistic.  Activities such as this can boost your happiness and are beneficial for your mental health in the long term. Something that I have recently reflected on is the attitude that NGHS has helped me develop. As a result of a “can do” attitude, I always love to take on new challenges and experiences. NGHS girls approach situations with a positive mindset.  We celebrate our uniqueness. And this brings happiness and fulfillment in lots of ways.

6. Use the SOS technique

Some of us experience negative “self talk”. This is something that discourages us from trying things because we can be too self critical. It is very common but it is something that we can learn to monitor and control. Being aware of our self talk, noticing it and stopping any negativity can become a powerful habit. It is good for wellbeing, happiness and success.

So wherever you are and whatever you’re doing, please keep well. Keep optimistic, positive and happy. This brings success, however you define it. And remember, the #NGHS community is here to support you whenever you need us.
