On Wednesday 28 February, we celebrated our Year 7–9 musicians in the Grand Final of the Windblowers Cup House Music Competition, an evening that truly showcased the remarkable talent, dedication and spirit of our young musicians.
We were especially honored to welcome back NGHS alumna and professional oboist Nicola Hands as our lead adjudicator. Nicola spoke with such warmth, insight and generosity, both documenting her own musical journey through the school and the overarching importance of championing girls in music. Her comments were both compassionate and inspiring, reminding us all of the confidence, resilience and joy that music brings to our school and of the lifelong impact of the opportunities embraced through music here at Nottingham Girls.
The standard of musicianship on display was nothing short of exceptional. Each finalist performed with poise and maturity well beyond their years, and the breadth of repertoire and instrumentation was incredible. It was a powerful testament to both the individual commitment of the performers and the strength of music making across the school.
Nicola took great care to celebrate the achievements of all the finalists, offering thoughtful and constructive feedback that recognised not only technical accomplishment but also musical expression and artistic guidelines. Awards were presented for first and second place in each category, alongside prizes for the most promising musician in each year group. The evening culminated in the announcement of the overall winner, congratulations to the super-talented Elsie P in Year 7, and the presentation of the House trophy, which was proudly awarded to Bolton by Head of Houses Mrs Jones.
We extend our warmest congratulations to all of our finalists and prize winners, and our sincere thanks to Nicola for her invaluable insights and as ever to our judges Nick and Richard from Windblowers Nottingham.
