A day at our Nursery & Pre-School

Our aim is to provide a fun, happy, safe environment for girls to develop their confidence, skills and love of learning. A day or a session at our Nursery is educational and fun from beginning to end.

So many exciting activities to take part in.

Timings of the day

The Nursery & Pre-School day mirrors the current school day, opening from 8:00am until 3:45pm with both Before School Club from 7.30am and After School Club until 6.00pm, available at an additional charge.

Our daily routine

From the start of the day to the end, it’s important that our girls get used to a fun, friendly and educational routine. Every part of the day is meaningful and builds an exciting expectation of what’s in store.

7:30 – 8:00am – We offer a breakfast club in our state-of-the-art Dining Hall. Your daughter can either be dropped off with a member of the breakfast club staff or alternatively, our Dining Hall is open for you to share a breakfast yourself before dropping your daughter off at Nursery and Pre-School.

8:00 – 8:30am – During our flexible drop off time to the Nursery and Pre-School classroom you will have the opportunity to speak to your daughter’s teacher, support your daughter’s independence as you help her to unpack her bag for the day and settle her into a self-chosen activity.

8:30 – 8:45am – Welcome circle. Now it is time for us to come together and start the day. We will do the daily register and go through our daily calendar bringing in maths as we talk about the days of the week and the date. We shall notice the weather and talk about the season as well as sharing any news we may have since the previous day.

8:45 – 9:00am – We will spilt into our two groups of Nursery and Pre-School for our phonics sessions. In doing this your daughter will be exposed to the relevant session for her age and ability but we have the flexibility and the advantage of small group sizes to tailor these sessions based on the individual needs of the children. Once a week we are visited by our Year 5 reading buddies who enjoy sharing favourite stories with our Nursery and Pre-School children. What a wonderful way of feeling a part of the whole school community.

9:00 – 10:00am – Your daughter will be involved in self-chosen learning through our continuous provision both inside and outside. Your daughter will have access to activities linked to our topic, her current interests and specific activities designed to target certain skills we may be focusing on. Each learning activity will be differentiated to meet those needs of both Nursery and Pre-School children and will offer challenge as well as promoting your daughter’s inquisitive nature. During this time, your daughter will be called to take part in an adult-led activity which shall either be in a small group or one-one.

10:00 – 10:30am – Snack and story time. This is a social occasion where we come together and reflect on our morning whilst enjoying a healthy fruit or vegetable snack. Following snack we shall split into our two groups; Nursery and Pre-School, where we enjoy a story and an activity linked to the story.

10:30 – 11:30am – Continuous provision as before.

11:30 – 11:45am – Maths. Again, by splitting into our two groups ensure that each session is tailored to the needs of each individual child.

11:45 – 12:00pm – It’s time to get ready for lunch. Your daughter will be encouraged to build her independence by going to the toilet, washing her hands and then putting on her lunch apron. The walk across to the dining hall is a wonderful opportunity to observe the world around us. We listen to the birds in the trees, take a look at the changing seasons for example seeing buds develop in the spring and crunching on the leaves in the autumn.

12:00 – 12:30pm – Your daughter is supported as she collects her lunch from the counter, is encouraged to try and cut her food and use her cutlery appropriately. A member of the team sits with the children to encourage eating. This creates a fantastic social opportunity too.

12.30 – 1.30pm – Your daughter will have the chance to burn energy and explore the playground with her friends from Reception.

1:30 – 3:15pm – After we have taken the register your daughter will have the opportunity to learn through play again and will be called for some tailored adult-led activities.

3:15 – 3:40pm – It’s time to tidy away and pack our bag ready for home time. Your daughter will end the day with either a story, nursery rhymes or a singing session.

It is expected that girls will attend a minimum of three full days per week. The 15 hours Free Entitlement Funding can be used to cover the morning sessions only.

  • Uniform

Girls wear the NGHS navy PE sweatshirt, sky blue polo shirt, navy jog pants or shorts, school coat and white trainers. They may also wear the NGHS summer dress in the Summer Term if they choose to. All of these items are available from Stevensons, our online school wear provider.

  • Meals and snacks

We request that a healthy snack (chopped fruit or vegetables) and water be brought in every day.

At 11.45am girls enjoy a home-cooked nutritious hot lunch in our state-of-the-art dining hall. We have a team of chefs who prepare a range of fresh meals every day, catering for a variety of dietary requirements. Girls are encouraged to try new foods to broaden their repertoire and Nursery & Pre-School staff eat with the girls, encouraging sociable meal times and good table manners.

A snack can also be provided in the afternoon for girls staying for After School Club beyond 4.00pm.

  • How to join

Parents are welcome for a tour of the Nursery & Pre-School at any time. Girls are invited to attend a taster session before an application for a place is made, after which we will arrange a further ‘stay and play’ session. This is an excellent way to begin building a trusting relationship with parents and their daughters, enabling us to find out as much as we need to help girls settle and flourish in our Nursery & Pre-School, and for parents to be able to ask us any questions they may have.
