On Monday 18 September, we welcomed former England cricketer, Lydia Greenway OBE, to officially open our brand new 1875 Sports Centre.

After months of building work, the recently completed sports centre has been built to enhance our existing sports provision for which we are already renowned. The new facilities include a fully equipped fitness suite, yoga and Pilates studio and a refurbished gym and sports hall where students can take part in basketball, netball, cricket, football and badminton amongst many other sports and activities.

Head, Julie Keller, commented:

Our girls love to play sport and cricket is one of the most popular. This summer our U13 and U15 squads were named County Cricket Champions, so I’m delighted that we could welcome professional women cricketers to NGHS, and help us champion the importance of girls taking part in sport.”

Joining Lydia were Leicestershire and The Blaze left-arm bowler Grace Ballinger, and Nottinghamshire and The Blaze right-arm off break bowler Lucy Higham. All three cricketers took part in a brilliant and fun coaching session with staff from the PE Department and students from the school.

Mrs Keller continued:

“Health and fitness is a core part of our school’s approach to educational success. We know that many girls in particular give up sport as they get older so providing an accessible and diverse sports programme in partnership with inspirational female role models is vital in giving girls the confidence they need to keep active for life.”

Our opening ceremony was also attended by former staff, school governors and a contingency from the GDST including CEO, Cheryl Giovannoni. Guests had tours of the new facilities led by some of our students, and all were suitably impressed. We are incredibly proud and delighted with this addition to the school and we can’t wait to see it in full use.

The September date is also close to a significant day in the school calendar as it was exactly 148 years since NGHS first opened its doors on 14 September. The 1875 Sports Centre opening marks the start of the school’s preparations for its 150th anniversary on 14 September 2025, about which we are very excited; there will be some amazing celebrations taking place.
