Step 2 – Entrance assessment
We are a selective school with high academic standards. Once you have completed the application form, we will arrange for your daughter to take part in an assessment. This varies depending on the year group, and aims to identify girls’ potential and passion for learning. We are currently running assessments virtually.
Infant and Junior School
Reception (age 4+) ‘Ready for School’ sessions
Head of Nursery, Infant and Juniors, Mrs Fowler, will meet with parents and children via Google Meet or Zoom. Your daughter will be asked some informal, fun questions to help us determine her readiness for school. We will arrange this for a time that suits you.
Years 1 – 6 assessments
Head of Nursery, Infant and Juniors, Mrs Fowler, will meet with parents and children via Google Meet or Zoom at a convenient time for you. Your daughter will then be invited to an online assessment. We usually enjoy welcoming girls to a ‘taster day’ in school, but to ensure both our prospective families and our current school community are kept as safe as possible, we are currently offering virtual induction sessions with Mrs Fowler and the relevant Year Group teacher. This is a great way for you to get to know us, and for us to get to know you and your daughter.
Girls applying for a place in Year 7 are invited to sit our entrance exam, which takes place in January each year. This year the entrance exam will go ahead but with extra safety measures in place to ensure social distancing. The next Year 7 entrance assessment is on Saturday 16 January 2021. We’ll be testing girls in English, Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning. Each paper takes around an hour. There’s no need to prepare for the tests, we are looking for potential and understanding rather than any specific subject knowledge. We’ll ask for a reference from their current school, asking for information on any school work that may have been missed last academic year due to lockdown, so that we can take this into account where needed.
Girls are also invited to a group interview with the Deputy Head during the week following the exam, which will take place using Google Meet or Zoom.
Current NGHS girls moving from Year 6 to 7 do not need to sit the entrance exam unless they are applying for a GDST bursary. We monitor the girls’ progress continually, and if we feel the NGHS Senior School is not the right environment for any girls due to its high academic standards, we will have a conversation with parents individually.
Year 8 – 10
Girls will sit our entrance exam with tests in English, Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning. We’ll also ask for a reference from their current school and invite girls for a virtual interview with the Head. Our selection will be based on the results of the tests as well as their interview and reference.
Girls will be invited to find out more about our school through Google Meet and Zoom. They will also have a virtual interview with the Head of Sixth Form.
We’ll request a reference from their current school, and offers of places are conditional on exam results. We require an average of Grade 6 across eight GCSE subjects, including English and Mathematics. For individual subject requirements please see the Sixth Form Prospectus and Curriculum Guide.
Step 3 – Offers of places
Offers of places will be made shortly after the entrance assessments.
If you have any questions about our school entry assessments or simply wish to find out more, please contact us or register your interest for our virtual open day where you will find out all about our progressive, creative and different school.
