Step 2 – Entrance assessment

We are a selective school with high academic standards. Once you have completed the application form, we will arrange for your daughter to take part in an assessment. This varies depending on the year group, and aims to identify girls’ potential and passion for learning.

Infant and Junior School

Reception (age 4+) ‘Ready for School’ sessions

Head of Nursery, Infant and Juniors, Mrs Fowler, will meet with parents and children initially. Your daughter will be asked some informal, fun questions to help us determine her readiness for school. We will arrange this for a time that suits you.

Years 1 – 6 Assessments

Head of Nursery, Infant and Juniors, Mrs Fowler, will meet with parents and children at a convenient time to suit you. Your daughter will then be invited to take part in an assessment. This is a great way for you to get to know us, and for us to get to know you and your daughter.

Senior School

Year 7

Current NGHS pupils in Year 6 do not need to apply for a place at the NGHS Senior School. We ensure a seamless transition from Year 6 to Year 7.

Girls applying for a new place at NGHS for Year 7 are invited to sit our entrance exam, which takes place in January each year. The next Year 7 entrance assessment is on Saturday 11 January 2025 and will take place in school. There’s no need to prepare for the assessment, we are looking for potential and understanding rather than any specific subject knowledge.

Current NGHS girls moving from Year 6 to 7 do not need to sit the entrance exam unless they are applying for a GDST bursary. We monitor the girls’ progress continually, and if we feel the NGHS Senior School is not the right environment for any girls due to its high academic standards, we will have a conversation with parents individually.

Application deadline for Year 7 2025 entry and any bursary or scholarship is 30 November 2024.

Year 8 – 10

Girls will sit our entrance assessment in school or online if necessary. We’ll also ask for a reference from their current school and invite girls for an interview with the Head. Our selection will be based on the results of the test as well as their interview and reference.

Sixth Form

Girls will be invited to find out more about our school with a visit/tour and will have an interview with the Head of Sixth Form.

We’ll request a reference from their current school, and offers of places are conditional on exam results. We require an average of Grade 6 across eight GCSE subjects, including English and Mathematics. For individual subject requirements please see our Sixth Form Prospectus.

Step 3 – Offers of places

Offers of places will be made shortly after the entrance assessments.

If you have any questions about our school entry assessments or simply wish to find out more, please feel free to contact us.

If you have anything you would like assistance with during the admissions process, please do let us know. We are committed to accessibility and will be delighted to help you.
