Step 2 – Entrance assessment

We are a selective school with high academic standards. Once you have completed the application form, we will arrange for your daughter to come into school for assessment. This varies depending on the year group, and aims to identify girls’ potential and passion for learning.

Infant and Junior School

Reception (age 4+) ‘Ready for School’ sessions

Your daughter will join us for a short session in our Reception class to help us determine her readiness for school. It’s friendly and informal. We’ll be looking for good speaking and listening skills and the ability to follow instructions. We will arrange this for a time that suits you.

Years 1 – 6 assessments

Your daughter will join us for a ‘taster day’, which will include an assessment in English and Mathematics. There’s no need to prepare for this. She’ll have a fun day with one of our current classes and find out more about school life here. We will arrange this for a time that is convenient for you

Senior School

Year 7

Girls applying for a place in Year 7 are invited to sit our entrance exam, which takes place in January each year. For girls applying to join in September 2020, the entrance exam takes place on Saturday 18 January 2020.  We’ll be testing girls in English, Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning. Each paper takes around an hour. There’s no need to prepare for the tests, we are looking for potential and understanding rather than any specific subject knowledge. We’ll ask for a reference from their current school, and girls are also invited to a group interview with the Deputy Head during the week following the exam.

Current NGHS girls moving from Year 6 to 7 do not need to sit the entrance exam unless they are applying for a GDST bursary. We monitor the girls’ progress continually, and if we feel the NGHS Senior School is not the right environment for any girls due to its high academic standards, we will have a conversation with parents individually.

Year 8 – 10

Girls will sit our entrance exam with tests in English, Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning. We’ll also ask for a reference from their current school and invite girls for an interview with the Head.  Our selection will be based on the results of the tests as well as their interview and reference.

Sixth Form

Girls will be invited to spend a day with us, to sample their preferred A Level classes and find out more about our school. They will also have an interview with the Head of Sixth Form.

We’ll request a reference from their current school, and offers of places are conditional on exam results. We require an average of Grade 6 across eight GCSE subjects, including English and Mathematics. For individual subject requirements please see the Sixth Form Prospectus and Curriculum Guide.

Step 3 – Offers of places

Offers of places will be made shortly after the entrance assessments.

If you have any questions about our school entry assessments or simply wish to find out more, please contact us or join us at one of our open events, where our staff will be on hand to speak to you.
