Before and after the Christmas break,  the NGHS Careers Department was delighted to welcome back some of our 2019 leavers who came in to discuss their university experiences with our current Sixth Formers.

Firstly we welcomed back Leila, Anna and Emily who talked about their experiences at Oxford University studying Law and Computer Science/ Philosophy respectively, making it very clear how different the Oxford teaching approach is from other universities and from their A Level study.  The girls talked about the quirks of one of our oldest universities, including the ‘family’ mentoring college system where you suddenly acquire new ‘parents’ and ‘siblings’ to help you make the transition and who stick with you throughout your time at Oxford.

Then, during the first week back after Christmas, Adeline and Holly dropped in to answer questions about their first term at Sheffield University Medical and Dental Schools. Our current girls were particularly fascinated with the topic of whole body dissection (yes they actually do that in Dentistry !) and had many questions about the UCAT and BMAT tests that medical and dental schools require, and how successful students prepare for these.

What was clear from their infectious enthusiasm, was that our alumnae were completely embracing their new courses and universities with the total commitment they showed as NGHS students, and it was fabulous to see that all of their hard work had been definitely worthwhile. There is possibly no better way to get these messages across to current students than inviting back those who have most recently left; our Careers Talks are proving very popular.
