As we begin an exciting new school year and try to make amends for the things that may have fallen by the wayside, sport is high on the agenda.

Some things were more suited than others to online learning during the disruption of the lockdown periods, but sport is something that really does require on site team participation. We have really missed taking part in actual PE lessons and sporting fixtures, home AND away, so we are redoubling our efforts starting from the Infant and Junior School upwards.

At our Infant and Junior School, our commitment to raising the profile of sport is part of a five year vision to equal our stunning music provision in terms of take up and opportunity. To this end, our Head of Juniors, Laura Fowler, and Director of Sport, Alex Hall, have devised an exciting programme of inter-house events each half term. This will also enhance the girls’ experience of being part of a House group, enable them to develop the characteristics of the Junior School RECIPE for Success, and raise some money for charity into the bargain. It’s a win-win situation!

Year 13 House Captains will be involved in the weekly events too so it will be a great transition exercise and the younger girls will get to spend time with some wonderful role models and see what great opportunities await them further up the school.

Each year group will have one period per half-term where they are involved in an inter-house, high energy, fun sports competition. The girls are loving this idea and Years 3 and 4 have already enjoyed an orienteering course at their first session.

There will be fun, there will be competition, there will be camaraderie, there will be House points, there will even be ice cream!

It’s another way for NGHS to provide not only opportunities for teamwork and exercise, but also that whole school, family feel that makes an NGHS education so special and rewarding.
