Keeping our lessons challenging, creative and interesting ensures that our girls are always engaged and motivated in their learning. Inviting special guests brings another dimension to teaching and learning, and last week at the Infant and Junior School, our visitors were also especially appropriate. Members of the British Army’s Royal Signal Regiment joined the school for the Maths Together week which also coincided with Remembrance Day 2021.

Maths Together
Maths Together was a celebration of the application of mathematics by solving real-life problems using mathematical skills. This included participating in a Times Table Rock Stars UK-wide tournament competition, and enjoying a whole host of collaborative challenges in and out of the classroom. These were made especially memorable by visits from men and women of the Royal Signal Regiment who form part of the 7th Infantry Brigade of the Desert Rats engagement team. The girls loved this as you can see from our photo gallery:

Maths Together and Poppy Day

Pupils from Years 3 to 6 enjoyed a range of indoor and outdoor activities to test their collaborative, logic and problem solving skills, their use of critical thinking, recall and dexterity. It was wonderful to see our girls working so hard, and seeing an accomplished female leader – Major Sally Calland – commanding and encouraging her team of professional male soldiers.

Remembrance Day and the Poppy Appeal
As Remembrance 2021 coincided with the Maths Together week, having the Army on site added real meaning to our annual Poppy Appeal too. The Year 6 ‘Sisters of Charity’ had been running a pop-up Poppy Appeal shop all week. They did an amazing job helping the youngest pupils to fix their poppies to their uniforms. Major Sally Calland from Chetwynd Barracks in Chilwell was super impressed with their efforts. And thanks to all the families and their generous support of the Royal British Legion, we raised well over £500 to help continue the important tradition of remembrance.

This was a very special and memorable week at the Infant and Junior School. As well as boosting their use of mathematics, the girls learned all about the history of the poppy and its meaning. And standing side by side with members of the British Army for the two minutes silence on Thursday was a great privilege.
