October is Black History Month and every year our aim is to celebrate and educate by highlighting significant Black figures in history, and the invaluable contributions they have made in society. Of course, diversity and inclusion features across our curriculum and school life whenever and wherever possible – the education never stops, but in October we double our efforts and we do this in a variety of ways.

This year at the Senior School, our Diversity Prefects did a great job, posting on social media and decorating the Atrium with posters and information about a different figure for each day of the month. These were also displayed around the school on the TV screens. The team worked really hard researching these individuals and the information they provided was fascinating and insightful; the girls found it really interesting and learned a lot.

One of the best ways in which we are able to highlight significant people and events is through performance and the creative arts, and it’s something the girls really enjoy and embrace wholeheartedly. So we are incredibly proud to bring you the Black History Month movie from our Infant and Junior School featuring:

  • A sketch from Junior Drama about Rosa Parks and segregation
  • A six song mini musical written and recorded entirely by Year 6 about Rosa Parks
  • A performance of ‘I Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody’ by Year 4
  • A performance of ‘This Little Light Of Mine’ by Year 5

It’s impossible to perform a song or a sketch without learning and understanding the meaning and history behind the lyrics. And the same is true of watching and listening to such performances. The educational benefits are far reaching and our youngest girls took all of this on board during the preparation and production of these pieces. You cannot help but be moved by their captivating performances and the mature understanding of such significant issues. We’re so proud of the efforts made by our whole school community in acknowledging and celebrating Black History Month.
