Careers advice at NGHS covers a broad spectrum of subjects. There are a lot of options out there, and we want our girls to have as much information as possible to help them make informed decisions about the future. Our alumnae and our parent body provide invaluable resources.

On Wednesday 25 November, 16 girls from Year 11 and from the Sixth Form attended a Careers Department lunchtime talk given by Emma Maraio, NGHS  mum and Business Psychologist.

Emma,  who’s a graduate of Nottingham Trent University, talked not only about how and why she chose  Psychology as a degree but how to use the time at university to take advantage of those wider extracurricular opportunities. Emma progressed from undergraduate Psychology to a Master’s in Business followed by Business Psychology roles in sports development, universities, and casinos, and is now working for an IT company helping the business effectively motivate and manage their most valuable resource;  their employees.

The girls asked Emma insightful questions such as, “what does an average day look like?” and, “are people with well paid jobs happier?”  Emma disclosed that she didn’t actually have a plan to get into Business  Psychology when she was a student but quite simply chose a degree course she thought she’ d enjoy, and her subsequent career path has been a result of gaining insight and experience along the way and gradually working out what she really valued in a job.

This was a fascinating talk; a rare glimpse into the working life of a professional Psychologist which was greatly appreciated by our students.
