We were delighted to welcome 2013 leaver, Gina Walter, to take part in our Inspiring Alumnae lecture series on Friday 29 April.

Gina is currently a graduate teacher and PhD candidate in the Department of English at the University of Bristol.

She delivered a lecture to the girls based around her PhD research on ‘how we know (or don’t know!) what the ghosts who appeared on-stage in Shakespeare’s time looked like: how actors played them, what they wore, and how audiences might have felt about them.’ She highlighted some of the ways that literature researchers can piece together evidence to understand how plays were originally performed in the 15-1600s.

Gina discussed how her research is useful for producing modern-day plays, and about her own personal experience working on a stage play of Shakespeare’s sonnets in 2021 – giving our students an idea of the kind of work accessible to arts PhD researchers and academics.

She also highlighted the opportunities that an English Literature degree could lead to,  as well as pursuing future research degrees. Our students really benefit from hearing about where your subject passions can take you and the exciting opportunities available for research and careers in the performing arts world.

Thanks to Gina for visiting us – we’re always grateful for the inspiration our alumnae bring. You can watch Gina’s fascinating lecture below:
