This year saw the return of the great GDST Bake-Off and we were thrilled to host the first semi final here in our Food Room at NGHS.
Representatives from six of our sister schools came along ready to do battle with the specially commissioned Mary Berry lemon Victoria sponge sandwich cake. Mary is herself a GDST alumna having attended the Royal High School in Bath, so a great inspiration to all our bakers.
The girls had to follow her recipe but were allowed to incorporate a few changes and to decorate as creatively as they liked, and the results were all amazing.
The Food Room smelt divine as the bakes were laid out ready for judging while the girls went off for their lunch. Our judges were two local County cricket players Georgie Boyce (Nottinghamshire County
Cricket Ladies, Loughborough Lightning and England U19) and Australian born Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club Player, Riki Wessels, as well as resident baking enthusiast Miss Shambrook – famed for making the best lemon drizzle cake in school!
They had the tough job of sampling each cake and rating it on presentation, technique and taste, as well as judging the cupcake designs that would be used in the final should the contestant be successful.
With judging over, the scores were added together and the winners announced. Four
winners in total were chosen who will go through to the finals in November at Sheffield High School, so congratulations to Florence Williams-Rowe and Britt Watson from Shrewsbury Highs School, 
Charlotte Carr from Norwich High School and India Beighton from Oxford High School on their amazing bakes.
It was a fabulous afternoon of culinary creativity enjoyed by all, and we can’t wait to hear all about the forthcoming final.
