As part of the Careers programme here at NGHS, Year 9 girls take part in a Business Enterprise Day and Year 10 girls enjoy a Careers at Speed event. It’s important to get them thinking about the future and what lies ahead in the world of work. Our Head of Careers, Laura Robinson, tells us more.

Year 9 Business Enterprise Day

The purpose of Enterprise Day was to get the whole of Year 9 together to focus on the core skills students need for successful future careers, and also to work on their transferable skills such as teamwork, leadership and communication.

During the day the time was divided between practical workshops on topics such as teamwork, creativity and marketing as well as team building tasks and working on the main challenge which this year was to create and promote a theme park!

You can read more about the day at the link below, which also includes a compilation of their promotional videos:

Year 10 Careers at Speed

The purpose of Careers at Speed was to get the whole of Year 10 together to explore a variety of different career options. Prior to the event during Year 10 PSHE, the girls were provided with a briefing about the event and were given time to research the careers undertaken by each of our guest speakers. This was to enable the girls to have questions prepared in advance which they may like to put to those particular speakers.

The guest speakers were a mix of NGHS alumnae, parents and NGHS employees and their careers included:

  • Operational Support Manager (NHS)
  • Historic Building Conservation
  • Veterinary Surgeon
  • Head of Psychology
  • Practice Nurse
  • Orthodontist
  • Interpreter
  • Technical Designer (Fashion)

The format of the event was to speed network in groups, so every five minutes the girls were rotated to the next guest speaker. This way the girls get a brief insight into each career and this assists with their career exploration and consideration in the future. Once the girls had spoken to all nine individuals, they returned to the main Google meet call to thank our guest speakers. All of our participating speakers were happy for the girls to contact them afterwards if they had a particular interest in pursuing their specific career.

It was a really successful event and hugely beneficial, allowing our Year 10 girls to have a brief glimpse into varied areas in the world of work so that they have as much information as possible when they’re making their own career choices.  We are very grateful to all of our guest speakers for giving up their time; it really means a lot.
