We hope that Hayley’s career journey and incredible experiences inspire our girls to dream big and see that in just a few years’ time, they too could do many extraordinary things, just as Hayley has done.
Graduate Civil Engineer
Hayley attended NGHS from 2007-2014, leaving with 3 A-levels in Maths, Biology and Geography. Hayley has really made the most of every opportunity given to her during her time at NGHS, and has gone on to be highly successful in her chosen field of Civil Engineering. We’re really proud of Hayley for excelling in her education and career, and gaining some outstanding achievements.
Hayley’s journey
While studying for my A-levels, I applied for and was awarded the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Undergraduate QUEST Scholarship – a national award for students beginning a Civil Engineering degree who demonstrate passion & dedication for the discipline, leadership potential, teamwork skills, and understanding of industry challenges.
As part of this scholarship, I was sponsored by Taylor Woodrow (VINCI Construction) which meant I had the opportunity to complete summer placements during my degree, equating to a further six months experience. In the first year, I was a site-based engineer on Victoria Dock Portal, part of Crossrail, London. Then the M5 Junction 4a-6 Smart Motorway upgrade and finally Whitechapel Station, Crossrail, respectively.
I graduated with a First-Class Honours Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Nottingham in 2018. Alongside my studies, I was an active student ambassador, promoting the department to prospective students and running taster days. I also represented students on several staff committees focused on departmental improvement. In recognition of my contributions, I received the Golden Jubilee Prize in my third year for non-academic involvement, and the Chris Maxwell Prize at graduation for the most significant contribution to the department throughout my degree. I was also part of the team awarded Best 4th Year Group Design Project.
After graduation, I joined my sponsor company Taylor Woodrow (VINCI Construction) as an Assistant Engineer working on High Speed 2 in Birmingham. I was involved in a number of sections of the project including working in the Land Access and Pre-Construction Teams.

In 2016, I began working my way up the ICE Graduates and Students committee in the East Midlands, starting as Secretary and finishing as Chair in 2018-2019, moving onto President of ICE’s Future Leader scheme in 2019-2020. In October 2024, I was awarded ICE East Midlands Regional STEM Ambassador of the Year (2024).
My most recent career milestone was in January 2025, where I gained Chartered status and became a Chartered Civil Engineer with ICE – it was a great start to the year and something I’m really proud of. Right now, I’m undertaking a part-time degree at the University of Cambridge, which I’ll graduate from in 2027 with a Master of Studies (MSt) in Construction Engineering.
My advice to future generations:
- At NGHS, the extra-curricular opportunities, completing my Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award and the 3 Peak Challenge have given me memories I’ll never forget.
- Take advantage of every opportunity – great things can come out of unexpected situations.
- Do what makes you happy and want to get out of bed in the morning. Find something you’re passionate about, you will succeed.
NGHS provided me with the confidence and work ethic to keep striving to reach my goals. They gave the help and support to find a career path that I absolutely love!Hayley Jackson
